Drums & Rhythm
Rhythm is a powerful source of creative inspiration.
Playing the drum with positive, healing intentions unites people in
community and connects us with our mother earth.
Since being introduced to West African Drums in 1991, I have had the honor of studying with such teachers as: Babtunde Olatunje
and Thione Diop. I have had the opportunity to take classes from Mamady Keita, Mapathe Diop, Glen Valez, Daw Coumba Diop, John-Paul Wright, Carolyn Brandy, Arturo Rodriguez, Kalani (rhythm with kids), Christine Stephens (healing with drums) and Athur Hall (drum circle facilitation).
*Studied traditional rhythms & tehniques in Senegal, West Africa,
while living with withmaster drummer Thione Diop and his family
*Performance experience with a women's vocal
and percussion
troupe mixing both traditional and
creative worldbeats
*Facilitation of drum circles with women, private classes,
schools, birth centers, rehabilitation shelters, and
with non-profit organizations
*Co- creator of Common Rhythms (building confidence, creativity and
community through rhythm) which has facilitated rhythm events for
over 2000 students, both children and adults, since Jan. 2005.
Common Rhythms has served Community Centers, Public
Libraries, school groups from preschool to
high school, private parties, as well as many
youth groups including Boys and Girls Aid Society of
Oregon, Child Aid, and Friends of the Children.
"Common Rhythms consists of highly organized
individuals who share their excitement for
learning and drumming with students. Their relaxed
manner, positive energy and genuine care for children
allows them to meet challenges with ease, adapting
their curriculum to the educational levels and needs
of each group"
